Abstract
Introduction. Infancy is the most crucial period in the life of a newborn baby. Their mother plays a crucial role the baby’s will growth and development. At this stage, the child’s care depends on the mother’s choice of nutrition for the baby. The breast feeding (BF) of a newborn with mother’s or donor’s milk is the most physiological; a combination of BF with formula is also possible; and full artificial feeding (AF) with full-fledged breast milk substitutes is acceptable. BF mothers should be aware that some foods and medications can enter breast milk.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the nutritional features of nursing mothers in real practice, their choices of the products and drugs for nursing mothers.
Materials and methods. An anonymous voluntary survey of mothers of infants aged 0 months to 2 years was performed in one of the messengers. The inclusion criteria were the mother’s consent to an anonymous survey, the birth of a full-term baby, negative neonatal screening data, and the absence of serious illnesses in the child and mother that could influence the choice of feeding approach.
Results. 90 respondents participated in the study. 70/90 (77.8 %) mothers had chosen BF, 4/90 subjects (4.4 %) resorted to AF, and 16/90 (17.8 %) mothers combined BF and AF. Only 27/90 (30.0 %) expectant mothers attended training courses or individual consultations on BF during pregnancy; 30/90 (33.3 %) mothers reported reading popular science publications, and 26/90 (28.9 %) mothers had no training BF at all. Awareness of food choices, adequate diet, and medication intake during the GW period was also insufficient. The overwhelming majority of respondents noted the need to consult a nutritionist at the stage of preparation for childbirth or directly at the maternity department.
Conclusions. During BF, the mother should take care of her health and the health of the child, paying attention to the correct choice of foods and medicines. It is necessary to expand the possibility of consulting a nutritionist for expectant mothers and women in labor at the prenatal stage and/or in the postpartum period.
